Roll-up Armadillo

I have been in the mood for making amigurumi lately, and while browsing through ravely looking for inspiration, I came across the pattern for this cute little guy, designed by Luna, and had to add him to my list.

I mean come on, it’s an armadillo that rolls up into a ball!

This is the first amigurumi pattern I’ve come across that is made using half double crochet instead of single crochet. It was really interesting to work it this way, especially since I haven’t done many patterns that call for half double crochet.

I’ll admit that the stitch choice made the project work up really quickly, but I had a lot of trouble keeping the yarn from separating while working the rounds. For some reason my hook didn’t want to take the loops through completely, instead wanted to get caught and try to split the strands in half. Because of this, it took me longer than it should have to complete the project.

My favorite thing about this pattern is that the armadillo can roll up into its shell, and my second favorite is the cute little toes he has. The picture doesn’t do it justice, but each foot has three tiny toes created using puff stitches. I’m always impressed with the level of detail that people put into their patterns. Little things like cute armadillo toes just make my day.

As you can see, he does roll up quite nicely into his little ball. However, I did read n the comments section that someone else used a hook one size larger than what was used for the body to create the shell. When I make this pattern again (and believe me I will), I’m going to give that a try. Just to give a little more room, which will also allow me to stuff the body a bit more. A chubby little guy would be even more cute.

I know most of the people who read this blog are crafty, but in case anyone is interested, you can buy this little guy on etsy. (Yes, I am shamelessly self promoting myself.)
